BFA beginnings

So this is not a public forum, but a conversation between you and I in between our BFA mentor meetings.

How to start/ questions to ask yourself:

  • What are the 3-5 pieces I would like to make for my BFA exhibition?

  • Who am I looking to for inspiration?

  • What materials will I utilize?

  • What is my plan to execute said work? Schedule?

  • What are you most looking for in guidance from me?

  • Source images- sketches- any images you can offer to help me see your vision?

  1. - For the three projects to be entered into the BFA exhibition I am looking to make 2 large scale figurative works, and one smaller wearable sculpture. The two prior pieces will be made using a variety of sculptural techniques and the former will be made using casting and beading techniques.

    - Antony Gormley has become a large inspiration for my full scale pieces due to the similarities in our work, especially when discussing themes of otherness and identity. I will also be looking towards art historical pieces such as the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa and other similar religious works. Lauren Kalman and how her jewelry interacts with the body serves the biggest inspiration for the wearable piece I would like to construct.

    - As a current trend in my work I would like all of these pieces to be mixed media. For these three projects, I plan on using cast aluminum, cord, paper or lurecraft, ceramic slabs, vinyl, cast bronze, and beads. All of these materials will be used in the three projects, not all materials in one project.

    - To execute this work I plan on working as if this were a regular studio class on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9-12. As for the various projects I plan to work on waxes and molds first as they will take a descent amount of time to create.

    - For guidance in this process I am mostly looking for technical expertise especially when dealing with installation needs. I will also be looking for discussions about the concepts in my work and how they can being heightened and/or altered.

    - My sketches will be on another blog post as this wont let me upload pictures in the comment section.
